Why we chose “There’s a Pig in My Class”
A pig in a Kindergarten? The title alone makes you smile – and that’s exactly what made us curious about this little gem of a book. Johanna Thydell, whom we otherwise know from more profound young adult novels, surprises us here with a wonderfully humorous picture book that stands out from the crowd.
Illustrator Emma Adbåge rounds off the whole thing with charmingly quirky drawings that perfectly match the absurd but heart-warming story. For us, this is a real find that shows how much fun books can be when they go a little outside the box.
Kids will like
A pig in a classroom: For little ones, this is pure chaos – and therefore, of course, pure fun. The idea of an animal simply shaking up everyday life is hilarious. Particularly funny are the scenes in which the pig enthusiastically throws itself into the arts and crafts lesson, and makes itself at home in the cuddly corner. Emma Adbåge’s pictures are bursting with small, endearing details that children can enjoy again and again. And of course: animals are always a hit!
Adults will like
Behind all the turmoil lies a sensitive topic: how much otherness can our everyday life tolerate – and how do children deal with someone who “doesn’t belong”?The story leaves plenty of room for joint reflection without coming across as preachy. Adults will also appreciate the subtle humor and the clever narrative style, which conveys more between the lines than you might suspect on first reading. The book also provides conversation starters about friendship, openness and community.
Another bonus: with its colorful illustrations, this beautiful book is a real eye-catcher on the bookshelf!
