Why we chose “Big Panda and Little Dragon”

A big panda and a tiny dragon who are friends. Just that combination sounds somehow special – and that’s exactly what caught our eye! James Norbury, from whom one might expect more profound thoughts, surprises here with a picture book that steps out of line in its own gentle way.

The delicate illustrations beautifully complement this unhurried, yet somehow deeply meaningful story. For us, it’s a real find that shows how much joy books can bring when they take us on a slightly different journey.

Favorite Image

For us, this image perfectly captures how valuable it is to simply be – without a to-do list, without a deadline. The cozy panda lies relaxed on its back in the green grass, the tiny dragon curious by its side. Above them is the simple yet profound message: “Doing nothing is never wasted.” Especially in a time when something constantly “has to happen,” children often intuitively sense how important these moments of pure being are. They watch clouds, daydream. And perhaps this very image inspires us to immerse ourselves more in this effortless presence – without hurry, without a goal. Just like that. It reminds us that it’s okay to simply observe the world and linger in the moment.

Kids will like

Two such different characters who are best friends? For kids, that’s just cool! The cuddly panda and the small, curious dragon traveling through the seasons together – an adventure that isn’t loud, but is significant. The short conversations are like little aha moments that invite them to think along. And the brilliant thing is: the story isn’t simply told from A to B, but consists of many small, fine scenes that you can rediscover again and again, browsing through your favorite scene. And let’s be honest: animals are always a hit.

Adults will like

Behind the gentle surface lies a rather deep question: How important are the small moments in life – and how do we find our place in the world, even when things get bumpy? The story leaves plenty of room to start conversations with children without being preachy. Adults will also appreciate the subtle humor and the clever narrative that tells more between the lines than you might think at first glance. Incidentally, the book also provides talking points about friendship, acceptance, and the happiness in simple things. It invites you to pause and creates connection – with the child next to us and with ourselves.

Another bonus: with its colorful illustrations, this beautiful book is a real eye-catcher on the bookshelf!

If You Like “Big Panda and Tiny Dragon”
James Norbury is a true explorer – as an author, artist, and as someone who likes to think outside the box. Inspired by Eastern philosophy and his own search for meaning, he has created a modern classic with this book that encourages reflection. And the journey continues: With books like “A Beautiful World” or “The Cat Who Taught Zen” there’s even more of Panda’s and Dragon’s wisdom to discover.

More Recommendations from Our Collection

If the gentle friendship between Panda and Tiny Dragon touched you, and you appreciated the quiet wisdom in their encounters, we’d like to recommend a few more picture books that convey big feelings and thoughts in a similar way. “The Badger’s Bad Mood” by Keiko Kasza – With a lot of humor and sensitivity, this story shows that it’s perfectly natural to be boisterous or grumpy sometimes, or “Frederick” by Leo Lionni – A classic that wonderfully celebrates the importance of the inner world and “sunshine words” for our community.
