Autumn rituals with kids: ideas for indoors and outdoors

4 min read

The temperatures are dropping, mornings greet us with a crisp breeze, pumpkins are popping up in every supermarket, and you’re slowly getting used to reaching for a jacket or jumper again. Autumn is here!

As the days grow shorter, a new season of family fun begins.Paddling pools and sandpit play may be over for now, but autumn brings plenty of opportunities to slow down, get cosy and enjoy simple rituals together, both indoors and out.

We’ve gathered plenty of simple indoor and outdoor ideas for you to try together. Who knows, one or two might become family favourites for autumns to come.

Outdoor autumn rituals with kids

Autumn discovery walk with a scavenger hunt: A walk always works. Why not add a bit of spice and excitement with a small challenge, like hunting for specific things along the way? For example: collect 5 chestnuts, 4 yellow leaves, and 3 acorns on your walk.

Nature treasure pouch: Similar to the scavenger hunt, but here the kids are free to choose whatever treasure catches their eye. Each find can go into a little treasure box, which slowly grows into a small autumn collection over time.

Wellies walk: Is there anything better than pulling on your wellies after a rain shower and heading out to see which puddles are the deepest? This one turns into a ritual almost by itself: whenever it rains, the wellies walk follows right after.

Our tree: Pick a tree together with your child that you’ll visit regularly, say once a week, and watch as it changes colour and slowly loses its leaves.

Dusk walk: Since it gets dark earlier in autumn, a short evening walk makes a lovely, season-specific ritual. After all, it’s still light out at this time in summer.

Apple or pumpkin farm visit: If there’s a farm nearby that offers this every year, “going once each autumn” counts as a ritual too. Many farms even host annual pumpkin festivals with activities just for younger visitors.

Window weather check: This ritual sits perfectly between indoors and outdoors: before heading out each morning, go to the window together with your child, guess the weather, and pick out the right clothes for it. Your child will love getting to make that little decision themselves.

Indoor autumn rituals with kids

Music or dance session on rainy days: When it’s pouring outside, burn off some energy indoors by dancing freely to your favourite autumn songs. As an added bonus, it gives the grown-ups a welcome break from the daily routine too.

Craft afternoon: On a fixed day each week, or whenever it rains, set aside time for crafting, think chestnut figures or hedgehogs made from paper plates.

Keeping a shared diary or nature calendar: Draw a little picture or write a word each day about how the day went. It’s also a lovely way to get chatting with each other.

Puzzle or board game evening: A fixed evening each week for putting together an autumn puzzle or playing a board game of choice. It can quickly turn into a real family event.

Cooking with the seasons: Once a week, cook a tasty dinner together using seasonal ingredients, like a creamy pumpkin soup.

Scent ritual: Let cinnamon or cloves simmer on the stove while you craft together. Sensory rituals like this work wonderfully as a lead-in to other rituals, especially reading together: if the same scent fills the room every time before story time, it naturally builds anticipation for that shared reading moment.

Reading together: Get cosy. Light a candle, share a cup of tea or hot chocolate, or simply snuggle up close and enjoy the time together. That’s how shared reading time becomes a steady, comforting ritual.
