French names and the meanings behind them

It’s our pleasure to introduce you to these beautiful names. French names not only sound beautiful, but they invariably have a wonderful meaning behind them as well.

Amélie – A hugely popular girl’s name, which might remind some of the character in the 2001 romantic comedy ‘Amélie’. The name itself means ‘The brave’.

Colette is the French nickname for Nicolette. This name means ‘victory of the people’.

Another popular French name for girls is  Elodie. Here you’ll find several different meanings: ‘foreign riches’, ‘The wealthy’, ‘The free’ and also ‘meadow flower’ .

The name Florence is used for both boys and girls. That being said however, it is more commonly used as a name for girls. The meaning of this name is ‘blossoming’ and might make some think of the rock band, ‘Florence + the Machine’

A name containing the French word ‘belle’ can of course only be a beautiful name. Isabelle is the French variant of Elizabeth and means ‘God is gracious’, ‘Devoted to God’ or ‘The eternal beauty’.

Margaux carries the meaning ‘The pearl’ or ‘the child of the light’. So far, we’ve printed personalized books for three children with this name.

One of the names we’ve seen more rarely is Meline. In French this is an abbreviated version of the name Ameline. The meaning of the name is ‘honey’.

Valérie. This beautiful name means ‘the healthy’ or ‘the strong’.

The French boys’ name Laurent means „laurel-crowned.

Benoît is both a boys’ first and also a French family name. So far we’ve only been asked to print one book with this name. The Name itself means ‘the blessed one’.

A name which couldn’t be more French if it tried, is François and we love its meaning. The name literally means ‘Little Frenchman’.

The French version of the name William, Guillaume means ‘with gilded helmet’.

The name Maël means ‘Prince’. It’s a shortened version of the celtic name Amael.

Noé is the French variant of the name Noah. It carries the meaning ‘Calm’ or ‘comfort’.

Vincent means ‘the victorious one’.

The French name Thibault means ‘the brave of the people’ or ‘the bold’.
